I4WORLD

I4WORLD - Imaging and Characterisation for a Sustainable World (2022-2027) is a new doctoral programme within a well-established doctoral training environment at the University of Oulu in Finland co-funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action Co-funding of regional, national, and international programmes (COFUND).

The programme will train 25 Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs) with comprehensive understanding on environmental, economic and social sustainability. I4WORLD is based on taking the benefits of novel imaging and characterisation methods beyond the traditional borders between research fields to the sustainable world.

Meet the Researchers

In the Spring of 2023, 25 doctoral researchers were selected for the I4WORLD doctoral programme. The programme received 244 applications from 48 countries by the deadline of January 31st, 2023. The selection of the doctoral researchers was based on the excellency of the candidates and their proposed work. Doctoral researchers represent nine different nationalities, ten of them are women and 15 men.

Reseach themes

I4WORLD builds on combination of world leading novel imaging and characterisation methods excellence towards achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. I4WORLD benefits from the interdisciplinary expertise and wide intersectorality in selected themes within the UN’s SDGs, in focus for UOULU and Partner Organisations.

Training

The University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS) with its four internal doctoral programmes provides an excellent doctoral training environment and versatile options to support ESRs in the I4WORLD. The programme will include individual scientific training given under expert supervision and during the secondments by the companies and academic partner organisations.

The study requirements of I4WORLD comply with the general requirements of the UniOGS. The overall structure of the four-year doctoral training consists of the studies (min. 40 ECTS), research, secondment(s) and thesis.

Initial descriptions of the mandatory scientific and transferable skills training courses common to all are portrayed below and to be updated. Training courses are also available for all the doctoral researchers at the University of Oulu.

Participating research units

Application phase included 24 research units from six different faculties from the University of Oulu. After the external evaluation doctoral researchers selected to the programme will be hosted in ten different research units in five different faculties.

Partners

The Programme included partners in the application phase 41 academic and 26 non-academic partners (private companies and public organisations). After the external evaluation doctoral researchers selected to the programme will be hosted during their secondments, supervised and trained with 22 partner organisations.
