Sigrid Jusélius Foundation distributes significant support to medical research — University of Oulu receives a donation of 300 000 €

Sigrid Jusélius foundation has decided to distribute a record-breaking 32.2 million euros in grants and donations to medical research in 2022. Most of the support is distributed in grants. In addition to grants, the Foundation will donate a total of 2.2 million euros to six Finnish universities conducting medical research. University of Oulu received a 300 000 € donation. Total amount of grants to researchers at the University of Oulu was 1,3 M€

“Our strong financial standing and, on the other hand, the decline in public funding for medicine urge us to do more to support the work of top-level researchers. I’m glad to say we will be able to distribute a significant additional sum this year”, says Jussi Laitinen, Managing Director of the Sigrid Jusélius Foundation.

“The University of Oulu wishes to express great thanks for the substantial donation of the Sigrid Jusélius Foundation. The Foundation plays a very significant role in supporting medical research at our university. We very much appreciate the Foundation's long-term activities as a research contributor both in grants and donations”, commends Taina Pihlajaniemi, the Vice Rector for Research.

A donation made by the Sigrid Jusélius Foundation is eligible for government matched funding, which greatly increases the effectiveness of the donation. Sitra will capitalise universities for a total of €67 million based on the private capital they have raised by 30 June 2022. The University of Oulu has an ongoing fundraising campaign to raise private capital and maximise its matched funding share.

The Sigrid Jusélius Foundation is the biggest private supporter of medical research in Finland. In addition to the University of Oulu, the donation was received by the Universities of Helsinki, Turku, Tampere and Eastern Finland and Åbo Akademi.
