Apply to become a Student Tutor/ Kummi

The application to become a student tutor/kummi for Autumn 2022 starts on January 3rd, 2022. Student tutors guide the new students of University of Oulu with the beginning of their studies. You can apply to become a student tutor for students starting in international master’s programmes, or to become a kummi for incoming exchange students for Autumn 2022 or Spring 2023. Faculties and degree programmes are responsible for choosing and deciding the student tutors. For more information you can contact your degree programmes student tutoring contact person.

Apply to become a Student Tutor/ Kummi

As a student tutor you are should be ready to:

  • be willing to learn new things and develop yourself
  • be responsible student who has taken care of the studies well
  • to be familiar with the general way things work at the University of Oulu
  • take part in Student tutoring training (in English).
  • have a good command of the English language. At least basic Finnish skills are also recommended
  • be in Oulu at the time when new students arrive in early September 2022 (beginning of January for Spring 2023 exchange students).

The students who are chosen as student tutors have to take part in trainings, some of which are done independently in Moodle environment and some in joint sessions.

Dates for the joint sessions:

  • 15.3. klo 15:00-16:00 Kick off meeting (in English)
  • 22.3. klo 14:00–16:00 Additional training for kummi students
  • 29.3. klo 15:30-17:00 Group guidance skills and supporting study well being (in English)

  • 29.9. klo 16:00-18:00 joint meeting with tutor teachers (in Finnish and in English)
  • 15.11. klo 14-15:30 final get together and feedback session (in Finnish and in English)

Total number of hours to be spent on tutoring is at least 10 hours. Student tutors are working in hourly teaching task and they receive the regular student tutor compensation (14,10 euros per hour). Faculties are required to give student tutors a student tutoring certificate. Faculties can also give credits on student tutoring. More faculty specific information can be received from student tutoring contact persons.

N.B.: If you are employed by the University of Oulu during the student tutoring period (for example internship) you cannot receive the regular guidance fee. There is another way to pay the fee.
