Research by Marko Moilanen builds a bridge between the fields of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), with a special focus on Human-Centered Design (HCD), and Information Systems (IS), particularly Digital Transformation. For doctoral thesis, Marko's focus is on exploring design principles and frameworks behind Disc Golf Application Design. Marko is interested in complex ecosystems where diverse stakeholders with conflicting interests converge. To address these challenges, Marko is developing a design framework that considers users and stakeholders at the level of their expectations, needs, and wishes, integrating their flow and ethics into the design and evaluation processes. This framework aims for an ideal ‘win-win-…-win’ condition, where all participants benefit by gaining the specific value proposed to them.

As a member of the INTERACT research group at the University of Oulu, Marko is not committed to a specific research paradigm and has experiences in both the positivist and interpretivist paradigms. Generally preferring qualitative, empirical research methods, Marko is also familiar with Design Science Research (DSR). Research methodologies such as Case Study, Grounded Theory, and Action Design Research (ADR) form Marko's research strategy. Marko has adapted several research methods, including contextual inquiry, thematic analysis, affinity diagrams, and virtual ethnography, as well as more conventional techniques like questionnaires, interviews, and observations.
