Dr. Nieminen is Professor of Medical Physics and Vice Chair at Research Unit of Medical Imaging, Physics and Technology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Oulu, Finland. He is also Chief Physicist at Department of Diagnostics, Oulu University Hospital, Oulu, Finland.
Prof. Nieminen has actively published on different aspects of medical physics, medical imaging and biomedical engineering. His principal research interest is the development of novel imaging techniques for tissue characterization. He is internationally recognized as one of the key researchers in the field of quantitative magnetic resonance imaging of articular cartilage and osteoarthritis. His other research interests include the application of artificial intelligence in disease detection and image reconstruction. He has formerly conducted research at Harvard University and University of Kuopio. He is also a qualified special medical physicist (EFOMP Policy Statement 12.1). He has received the Fellowship Award of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (2015) and Carl Wegelius Award of the Radiological Society of Finland (2012). He has won some 7M€ of external funding during his senior career.
