Becoming a UniMove pro: a guide to staying fit as a student
Whether you're a beginner or a fitness enthusiast, UniMove offers a variety of activities, from gym sessions to dance classes. It always has something that'll make you sweat with a smile.

Signing up is easier than pronouncing "Linnanmaa" correctly on your first try:
- Download the UniMove app (one of the most user-friendly apps I’ve used!). It provides clear information for new members, a calendar of available classes, and easy booking.
- Sign up using your Haka login (UniOulu credentials).
- Gym shift & guidance: New to the gym? Don’t worry. I walked in not knowing a dumbbell from a kettlebell! UniMove offers introductory gym guidance, usually on Tuesdays, perfect for beginners. You’ll learn how to use equipment safely and effectively.
- Access remote classes: When -30°C hits or your schedule screams "NO!”, Join 30-minute virtual classes (like floor pilates and yoga) via Teams. No extra cost, just your Haka login. This has been my not-so-guilty escape during exam weeks, because even stress needs a timeout.
What’s available?
UniMove offers diverse activities for all fitness levels:
- Beginner-friendly: Volleyball (easy), adult ballet (yes, I tried it with zero experience and loved it!). And Fitness boxing, where I discovered throwing punches is way harder than it looks. Miraculously, I didn't break anything and learned basic tactics!
- Advanced: Ice hockey, badminton and futsal for those craving intensity.
- Dance & cardio: My go-to for a full-body burn. Zumba and DanceMix keep me moving (and sweating, even in winter). Brasil-afro dance brings vibrant energy, while Commercial dance lets me channel my inner pop star. The best part is that it never feels like exercise.
- Strength & flexibility: Pilates, gym workouts and yoga perfect for refreshing both body and mind.

Why it works (even if you're not "sporty")
I find the ‘in-session feeling’ a natural stress reliever. Whether it is laughing with friends on how the new activities we try sometimes don’t go as planned, or just enjoying the post-workout chat, or dancing like nobody is watching (because honestly everyone’s too focused on not tripping or simply having a good time). All these will contribute to your peace of mind.
