My first-year experience in studying Computer Science and Engineering

This degree programme covers the broad field of computer science, focusing on areas such as programming, artificial intelligence, data processing, and engineering mathematics.
You will choose between four orientations: Computer Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Applied Computing, and Cyber Security. Moreover, you can select electives that match your personal interests, giving you flexibility to tailor the programme to your goals.

My experience
This being my first degree, I cannot compare it to other university systems, but I can confidently say that the University of Oulu is incredibly welcoming.
On the first days we were welcomed by tutors, guild members, and professors that gave multiple orientation sessions and guided us through all the steps we had to take, for example in planning our studies for the whole degree, or by giving us helpful advice on how to manage a study schedule.
When the actual classes began, I knew what to expect about each course structure, content, and grading system, without any kind of surprise!

The university life
As I mentioned previously, the university is very welcoming, not only for the vast number of cozy places and cafeterias, but also for the way the supportive academic culture.
It was a small culture shock to see that the studies are not based on assimilating big amounts of information just to repeat them on exam day. Instead, most courses are structured with regular exercise sessions and labs, making it easier to stay on track with lectures and significantly reducing stress.
Another thing that stood out to me was that some courses do not even rely on traditional written exams. Instead, they are designed in a way that allows students to progress at their own pace, using the provided resources to complete tasks and show their progress through different projects.
Overall, I have had a great experience with the Computer Science and Engineering bachelor's programme and the University of Oulu so far. It's not only about studies, it's about being supported and having space to grow as a person.
If you are considering a programme which allows you to explore your interests in tech but keeps things flexible and welcoming, then definitely take a look at Computer Science and Engineering!
