Oulu Beginner’s Guide - tips for the first days

I arrived in late August, a couple of weeks before the start of classes, which gave me plenty of time to explore the city and its surroundings.
Bureaucracy
On the University website, you can find plenty of information on how to navigate the necessary steps to ensure everything is for your stay in Oulu. From registering your residence to setting up a bank account and arranging healthcare.
Early expenses
When moving, you will inevitably need to buy some new items - whether it is furniture or clothing - depending on your apartment’s setup and what you already own. I would not advise spending money on anything right from the first day. Finland has a great second-hand culture which allows for finding good furniture and clothes in great condition.
If you arrive in the summer, you do not have to deal with the cold weather just yet. You will have time to research and prepare for fall and winter. This way, you can make thoughtful purchases rather than spending impulsively.
Here are some essentials to consider:
- Shades or blackout curtains: if you are not used to the light time, sleeping with so much daylight can be challenging. Invest in something to keep your room dark - it will make a big difference!
- Rain gear: the rainy season is just as important to consider when preparing. A good raincoat and waterproof layers are more practical than umbrellas, which most of the time will not withstand the wind.
- Winter clothing: proper winter gear is a must. Other articles will dive deeper into this topic, so take your time and find what works best for you.

Time to explore!
Now that you are all set up, it is time to explore! So, where should you go?
Let me tell you, Oulu with the sun is simply magical.
You have probably heard about Oulu's bike lanes and how the city really comes alive during summer. You can get to most places with just a bicycle, and there are plenty of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Apart from the known spots, such as Hailuoto Island and Nallikari Beach, try to wander off the beaten path and find your own secret places.
With the autumn get ready for the northern lights! The aurora season is an experience like no other, and it is easy to prepare for it. Head out at night and look for a completely dark spot, free from city lights and tall trees - it will not be hard, try going near lakes or beaches - then download an application that tracks aurora activity and be ready!

A few final tips
I think the previous advice covers the essentials, but here are some smaller tips that might come in handy:
- Shop opening hours: most shops close early, especially on weekends, so make sure to check their schedules in advance to avoid surprises.
- Mosquitoes: what can I say, just be prepared. They might get annoying, especially during the summer!
- Ice: for the most part, Finland does not experience natural disasters, but ice makes up for it. Be careful!
