The resident permit application process

As an international student, one of the most important things to begin with to make your study dreams a reality, is your resident permit application. It is a process that requires careful planning and one where you need to dot your I’s and cross your T’s carefully.

My advice

Applying for a residence permit is a process you need to begin to think of the very moment you decide you want to study in Finland as an international student. I will outline the process for you, exactly as I did for myself to get my resident permit.

Top ten to do's

  • Accept your study place after getting the admission offer. Accepting your study place before the due date given ensures you get your official admission letter, which is one of the most important documents you need to apply for your resident permit.
  • If you are a fee-paying student, ensure to pay your tuition fee, as you would require showing this proof in your resident permit application.
  • Ensure you have a valid passport that is valid for the duration of your study.
  • Ensure you have and show valid health insurance covering medical expenses. Confirm the minimum coverage required.
  • Ensure to have copies of your passport photograph taken in line with Finnish photo guidelines.
  • Pay the required application fee for your resident permit application. Confirm the options and the cost from the Migri website.
  • Book an appointment at the nearest Finnish Embassy or Consulate, attend the appointment to verify your identity, provide biometric data (fingerprints), and submit original documents if required.
  • The processing time varies but you can track the progress of your application. Wait for your decision and if your application is approved, you will receive email confirmation and your residence permit card.

It is definitely a process that kickstarts what will most likely be the happiest and enjoyable moments of your career and life in Finland.

Wishing you all the best as you embark on the process and begin your journey to a happy and memorable life in Finland!
