The event is organised as a part of the 25 ECTS University Pedagogy Studies provided by the Faculty of Education and Psychology. In the event, the participants who attended these studies will showcase their learnings, pedagogical developments and innovations.

The keynote speakers will be Assistant Professor Khánh Nguyen working in the Faculty of Education and Psychology and Kaisa Karhu working as a development manager in Academic Affairs at the University of Oulu.

The themes of the parallel sessions are Sustainable education, Online and emerging technologies in education, Inclusion and diversity in teaching, Various approaches to teaching, and Approaches for guidance, learning and support.

The languages of the event will be Finnish and English.

Session 1: Sustainable education

Session 2: Online and emerging technologies in education

Digital technologies are adopted in teaching and learning for a variety of reasons. On the one hand, pressures such as increasing use of remote delivery modes and scarcity of resources drive teachers to seek new technology-based solutions. On the other hand, new technologies in themselves attract teachers and students alike to come up with various ways of using them.

In the morning, we will discuss how teachers and students can use artificial intelligence applications effectively and responsibly in higher education settings, how instructional videos can be utilized in teaching mathematics, and how podcasts can be used in medical education.

In the afternoon session, we will begin with a presentation on how AI works in education. Following that, we will engage in a roundtable discussion about how educators can ensure student learning and evaluate AI-assisted or polished assignments. The second presentation will focus on strategies for educational success in the 21st digital age. Finally, the session will conclude with a pre-recording session on adopting technology in online and hybrid teaching environments.

About keynote speakers

Vesa-Matti Sarenius, Director of Academic Affairs
Vesa-Matti Sarenius knows much about education procesesses in the University of Oulu, nationally and internationally. Not a Doctor but published articles about Pink Floyd and mathematics education.

Dr. Andy Nguyen, Assistant Professor
Andy Nguyen is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Hybrid Intelligence: Human-AI Co-evolution and Learning in Multi-realities (HI) PROFI7 project, working at the Learning and Educational Technology (LET) Research Lab, Faculty of Education and Psychology. He is currently a Research Council of Finland (a.k.a. the Academy of Finland) postdoctoral research fellow, an editorial board member of the British Journal of Educational Technology, and an associate editor of Policy Futures in Education. His presentation will focus on learning and teaching in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI), highlighting what teachers should be aware of regarding AI and how education needs to be reformed to meet societal needs in this era, aiming towards hybrid intelligence.

Paula Vaskuri, Head of Services
Paula Vaskuri has worked at the University of Oulu since 2001, initially in diverse tasks and projects in the development of virtual teaching and later digital pedagogy both nationally and internationally. In February 2017, she launched a voluntary, unresourced digital tutor network, and in September 2023, she launched digital mentoring activities resourced with additional strategy funding from the Ministry of Education and Culture. The digital mentoring activities have received very positive feedback. In her short briefing, Vaskuri talks about the goals, work and operating models of digital mentoring activities and introduces digital mentors by faculty.

Kaisa Karhu, Development Manager
Kaisa has been working at the University of Oulu since 2003 in various guidance positions. Her presentation will reflect on what the First Year Experience consists of and how we can in teaching support students' commitment to their studies and a good start to their study path, how student-centeredness and accessibility are related to a good learning experience, and how teaching work can strengthen the construction of an expert identity and promote employment.
