13.00 Coffee

13.15 Opening words: Prof. Satu Nätti, Oulu Business School

13.20 "The darker side of business networks and relationships: navigating challenges & tensions as part of resilience building", prof. Judy Zolkiewski, University of Manchester

Abstract: Preparing for this seminar has made me reflect on how I can introduce ideas about how we can view ‘resilience’ in a way that reflects what is actually happening in business. I would argue that this needs to be from an interactive perspective where firms are not seen in isolation but understood through their interactions with other actors in the network, essentially an IMP (Industrial Marketing and Purchasing) view. The Covid 19 pandemic and increasing concerns around sustainability are highlighting resilience in discussions about businesses, relationships and the networks in which they reside. With respect to my academic research we can see common themes, looking at the darker side of relationships with investigation into areas such as negative consequences of deep relationships with suppliers, dark side of value co-creation in service networks and tensions and harmony in coopetition, territorial tensions in servitization and value spaces, challenges manufacturers face around new service development and different levels of challenges digital service innovation pose for servitization. The challenges, barriers and tensions we identify in this research all require firms and the networks they are embedded in to show resilience to overcome them (much of our work focusses on capabilities needed to overcome these challenges and therefore could be argued to be important for resilience).

Commentary: Associate prof. Hanna Komulainen, Oulu Business School

13.55 "Resilience and income inequality in public good games: a behavioural economics perspective", prof. Michalis Drouvelis, University of Birmingham

Abstract: Resilience, the ability to adapt and thrive amidst adversity, is a critical trait for individuals, communities, and economies. Public good games, which explore cooperation and the provision of shared resources, offer valuable insights into collective resilience. In this talk, I will discuss how income inequality, a persistent global challenge, can causally affect collective resilience in situations where personal interests and group benefits are at odds. I take advantage of the experimental methodology to gain a better understanding of the psychological and social factors influencing pro-sociality in adverse economic conditions.

Commentary: Adjunct prof. Evangelos Mourelatos, Oulu Business School
