Abstract
Climate change and increasing ecological vulnerabilities around the world are expected to have significant implications for the future of travel and tourism. Research in the field has extensively referred to notions like resilience and sustainability in relation to sudden or long-term impacts on activities, communities, and individuals. Yet, there is increasing academic debate questioning the use of this concepts in tourism studies and policy practices. On the one hand, there is increasing concern among scholars as to whether research on sustainability and resilience in tourism effectively addresses how tourism impacts and is impacted by climate change. On the other hand, sustainable development and resilience building thinking in the field tend to keep the ecological dimension out of the equation. Given the idea of the Anthropocene and related planetary boundaries, reframing resilience, sustainability, and climate change under a renewed approach is, therefore, a priority.
The purpose of this workshop is to provide a timely reflection on the conceptual divides and alternative nexuses towards a postdisciplinary and panarchical appraisal of resilience, sustainability, and climate change in tourism. The workshop will feature keynotes from prominent scholars in the field as well as activities to lay down the foundations of research in tourism geographies in climate changing contexts in the Anthropocene.
