Student associations
When you begin your studies, you will automatically become a member of the Student Union. At the beginning of the academic year, you pay the Student Union membership fee, with which you receive all membership benefits and the student card. By showing your student card, you are entitled to discounts on the train and the buses as well as at several stores and service providers. And above all, the Student Union will support you in matters related to the student’s interests in education and social policy and arrange free time activities.
You can turn to the Student Union with any questions related to studying and the everyday life of a student. Also, OYY provides information about student benefits, different events and other topical matters. The operations of the Student Union are based on securing a good life for students.

The OYY supports the activity of many clubs, hobby, subject and interest groups. These societies organize various activities that support studying and they also arrange free time activity and parties. Societies offer you possibilities to meet new people and find like-minded students, start a new hobby and help you to get the sense of belonging in the university community.
Every major subject has its own organisation for students called a student guild. These guilds arrange events, such as sauna evenings, parties, trips and sports hours, and they often have their own guild rooms in the university where you can have coffee, use computers and meet people. Each student guild also has its own overalls, each with their own colour. Overalls are used in student parties and create a feeling of togetherness.
You can find a list of all the student and interest societies from OYY's website.
In the University of Oulu there are also several student organizations focusing on international students wellbeing and networking. Erasmus Student Network (ESN) and Network of International Students in Oulu are both student lead guilds that offer weekly free time activities, events and projects for all students of the university. AIESEC works actively on campus promoting internationalisation and offering internship positions abroad to students.
