Applying for an extension of study right

Applying for an extension of study right in the University of Oulu - students studying for a Bachelor or Master’s degree.

Applying for an extension of study right

Students who started their studies after 1st August 2005 have a limited study period. Higher education degrees have target durations for study times (be sure to read the full instructions regarding the target durations for degree studies). If you are a University of Oulu student studying for a Bachelor's or Master's degree, you can apply for an extension to your study time if needed. The extension can only be granted for studies directly related to your degree.

If your normative degree studies period is approaching its end and you have not completed the necessary requirements for your degree, you can apply for an extension to your study time.

From 1st January 2025, applying for an extension will incur a fee (Government Decree 199/2024, 4 §). The fee is 50 euros per application. Please ensure that you pay the processing fee before submitting your Extension of Study Right application, and attach the payment receipt to the application. The application processing fee is non-refundable.

To apply for an extension of study right, use the eForms system and submit the Extension of Study Right application form.

Make sure to attach the required documents before submitting the application:

  • Transcript of records.
  • An up-to-date personal study plan (PSP) specifying the studies you will complete within a given schedule. This plan must be approved by your PSP instructor or your tutor/study counsellor. The plan must clearly indicate the studies to be completed and their completion dates with semester-level precision. You can take a screenshot of your PSP in Peppi, attach it to a Word document, and get the approval on that. If your only remaining study is the thesis, you must attach a statement from your thesis supervisor.
  • Attachments justifying any delays. You may include an expert statement outlining the reason for the need for extra time (e.g., a medical diagnosis), your personal details, the name and role of the person providing the statement, the statement's validity period, and the date. You can also add an informal explanation for the delay.
  • Receipt of payment.
