10th Nordic Sustainability Day in Luleå

Research seminars related to sustainable development and recycling in metallurgy have been organized in collaboration with Process metallurgy research units of Oulu and Luleå for over 20 years. This year’s seminar was already the tenth such event and it attracted over 60 participants from both industry and academia from Finland and Sweden. Eleven of the Finnish participants were M.Sc. level students participating on a course of environmental issues in metal industry.

This year the presentations were focusing on four topics:
- Process metallurgy in green transition
- Slag valorisation
- Biochar for metallurgical industry
- Battery metals: recovery/recycling.
Total of 14 presentations were held on these topics with good combination of university research as well as industrial cases, the latter of which were presented by SSAB, Boliden, Heidelberg Materials, Outokumpu, Vargön Alloys and Fortum. From the University of Oulu, the presentations were given by Eetu-Pekka Heikkinen, Pasquale Cavaliere, Anniina Merenluoto, Aki Koskela and Ulla Lassi. Practical arrangements were taken care of by Caisa Samuelsson, Bo Björkman and Fredrik Engström on the Swedish side as well as Anne Hietava on the Finnish side.
After this (once again) successful day, the next Nordic Sustainability Day will be held in Oulu in two years in spring 2027.
