9th International Slag Valorisation Symposium in Leuven

The 9th International Slag Valorisation Symposium was organised in Leuven Belgium from 8th to 11th April 2025. The topic for this year's event was "From residues to resources and resilience". Anniina Merenluoto had a presentation on the modification of HDRI-based EAF-slags.
International Slag Valorisation Symposium in Leuven

Slag valorisation symposiums are organised by KU Leuven every second year. The event consists of workshops as well as presentations from both industry and academia. This year, the program featured 5 plenary speeches, 66 oral presentations as well as 20 poster presentations.

Process Metallurgy Reseach unit was represented by two presentations and three participants. The presentations were given by Anniina Merenluoto and Marco Cantaluppi (from the Fibre and Particle Engineering Research unit) and they were titled "Effects of modification and granulation on the structure of DRI-based EAF slag" and "Characterisation of hydrogen reduced iron-based electric arc furnace slags (H2-DRI-EAFS) and comparison with scrap-based EAFs". The presentations were based on the research co-operation with SSAB Europe and Luleå University of Technology. In addition to Anniina, her supervisors Rita Kallio and Eetu-Pekka Heikkinen also participated the conference.
