Open sessions with hybrid intelligence –related themes

oin us in Oulu to engage with world-class researchers, educators, and innovators, discover transformative ideas for tackling today’s complex crises. Learn about emerging technologies shaping the future of sustainability, and network across diverse fields—from AI to climate science. Here are sessions that are closely related to the theme of hybrid intelligence:

Open session 300: Assessing Interdisciplinary Learning in the Age of AI

This session focuses on ways we can meaningfully assess our students’ interdisciplinary learning in the age of AI. Given the challenges of assessing interdisciplinary competencies, what sorts of assignments and prompting techniques might circumvent (or capitalize upon) students’ use of generative AI? For example, critical reflection plays a crucial role in integrating knowledge across disciplines and generating new insights; however, students can now engineer prompts for AI to create such reflections. How does AI impact the types of interdisciplinary competencies—such as disciplinary grounding, perspective taking, integration, critical reflection, collaboration, communication, adaptability and creativity (Blom, Scager & Wiegant 2020)—that we seek to assess, and how might we adjust our assessment practices as a result? Do particular forms or media work better for assessing interdisciplinary learning in the age of AI?

Open session 312: Digitalization serving humanity in healthcare

Digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI) play a significant role in advancing healthcare. AI can enhance the accuracy and speed of diagnostics, create personalized treatment plans, and provide continuous support to patients through virtual assistants. Remote monitoring and real-time analysis of patient data enable proactive identification of health issues. Additionally, AI can streamline operational processes in healthcare, reducing the workload of professionals. However, the adoption of these technologies also brings ethical and practical challenges, such as data privacy and system fairness.

We invite you to participate in a session discussing the utilization of digitalization and AI in healthcare. Join us to hear expert insights, share experiences, and discuss how we can collectively advance the future of healthcare. The session will cover topics such as the role of AI in diagnostics, patient care, operational efficiency, and medical research. We will also address ethical questions and practical challenges associated with the implementation of these technologies. You can participate with an oral presentation or a poster.

Conveners (conveners in bold will be present in Oulu): Elina Laukka, Oulu University of Applied Sciences, Mika Paldanius, Oulu University of Applied Sciences & Niko Männikkö, Oulu University of Applied Sciences.

Foresight Workshop on Mini-Scenarios for Human-Centric Digitalization

New technologies such as AI and 6G, aiming to realize Metaverse and other immersive services, will revolutionize how digital services will be developed, provided, and utilized in the future. The development of future digital techniques and services raises the need for human-centric digitalization as opposed to the technology-push seen earlier. Therefore, what human centricity will be about and mean in the context of digitalization, is an inter-disciplinary research challenge.

This foresight workshop aims at generating mini-scenarios on human-centric digitalization that support the identification of relevant and impactful topics for interdisciplinary research collaborations for the short, medium, and long-term future. Human-centricity, extending mere user-centricity, calls for a holistic understanding that embeds social, environmental and economic sustainability perspectives and covers technology, regulation, business, and social aspects. The workshop will have two parts. The workshop starts with short Keynote speeches that provide background for group work. Second, a facilitated mini-scenario workshop will be held that develops ideas for future interdisciplinary research collaboration.

Conveners (conveners in bold will be present in Oulu): Petri Ahokangas, University of Oulu, Marja Matinmikko-Blue, University of Oulu & Seppo Yrjölä, University of Oulu.
