Co-operation with the neighbours

Adjunct professor Eetu-Pekka Heikkinen is currently visiting Luleå University of Technology in Northern Sweden with an aim to strengthen the co-operation in metallurgical education and research between the neighbouring universities at Oulu and Luleå. The visit started in February and will last until the end of July.

During his visit, Heikkinen participates in both research and education activities in the research unit of process metallurgy with professor Caisa Samuelsson as a main contact person. Most of the activities are related to projects with goals to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of metal production processes. The main emphasis is on the increasing utilisation of hydrogen as a fuel and as a reductant as well as on the increasing utilisation of circular economy principles in metal production. These topics are currently of utmost importance in both industrial practices and academic research and education in Sweden as well as in Finland.

It is hoped - and planned - that Heikkinen’s visit will produce increased and deepened co-operation in metallurgical research and education also in the following years.
