Falling interest in the Science Communication Degree Programme – Focus shifts to strengthening it as a minor

The University of Oulu's Faculty of Humanities will not admit new students to its Master’s Degree Programme in Science Communication in autumn 2025. Instead, the role of communication studies will be strengthened through a science communication-focused minor, a unique offering not available at any other Finnish university.

Interest in the Master's Degree Programme in Science Communication has declined, and further reductions in demand are expected, partly as a result of changes to adult education support.

In 2023, the programme received 31 applications. Students have been admitted every other year, with an average intake of 12–15 students. On average, six degrees are completed annually.

"The communication minor will remain, and its role will be sharpened. Communication studies will be developed and expanded with a stronger focus on science communication," says Paula Rossi, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities.

According to Rossi, science communication as a minor would be a particularly valuable addition to the Finnish university landscape and offer opportunities for continuing education.

"As a minor, communication is very popular. Our unique focus on science communication helps us stand out positively from other universities."

The minor in communication also supports the strong major subjects at the University of Oulu in line with the faculty’s strategy.

The change will not affect current students enrolled in the Master’s Degree Programme in Science Communication.
