The first scientific intensive course organized by I4WORLD – interesting talks and discussions on various methods
The course was mandatory for 25 doctoral researchers part of the I4WORLD programme and was available for all doctoral researchers at the University of Oulu. Already considering the fact that that doctoral researchers at the I4WORLD doctoral programme are located in five different faculties and with different research topics, affected to the planning of the course. The course was planned to be introductory course to give an overall view of different methods and how they can be utilized in different research fields (e.g., physics, engineering, biology, medicine). Principle was that everyone should have topics closer to them and some totally new perspectives.
Training included lectures and demonstrations given by experts in and outside of the University of Oulu (Aalto University, Aston University, MAXIV, EMPA, GrainSense and Polar Electro). I4WORLD leader Marko Huttula encouraged doctoral researchers to “Learn, Discuss, Interact and Communicate”, and indeed the researchers did.
General feedback from the course was very good especially to the topics and contents covered at the course and practical arrangements. Some comments from the participants:
"This intensive course included very interesting lectures and some valuable talks on different topics helping us in providing different information. We learnt about different bio-imaging methods, tools and equipment’s available and learned how to use them. Special thanks to the organizers for such an impressive course."
"It was fascinating to explore and learn about all the various imaging methods and their practical applications during this intense course. A heartfelt thanks to all the experts for their great talks and for taking the time to share their knowledge and experience with us."
“The course was extremely engaging for me, as it encompassed nearly all aspects of various methods for characterizing materials produced by mixing with cement. During this course, I also observed the potential for using artificial intelligence to predict the properties of construction materials through machine learning and programming algorithms.”
I4WORLD will organize intensive courses also in upcoming years. Feedback is taken into consideration in developing intensive training courses in the future. Please follow I4WORLD website or ask updates from the programme coordinator Henna Longi.
The course was organized by the I4WORLD (Imaging and Characterisation for a Sustainable World) doctoral programme co-funded by the European Union. In addition, UniOGS Technology and Natural Sciences Doctoral Programme granted funding for this doctoral training course.
