Hycamite, Europe´s largest methane-splitting plant for low-carbon hydrogen production, uses technology based on University of Oulu´s research
H2FUTURE research programme had the honor of taking part in Hycamite´s opening of Europe´s largest methane-splitting plant for low-carbon hydrogen production in the beginning of September.
Hycamite TCD Technologies´ and University of Oulu´s paths are in intertwined since since H2FUTURE´s Professor Ulla Lassi´s team´s research is a part of the core technology used by Hycamite. Professor Lassi was invited to be interviewed in the opening ceremony that started with a visit to the Hycamite´s factory.
“The founders of Hycamite are alumni of the University of Oulu, and the university has had the opportunity to conduct long-term research in the areas of catalytic materials and thermocatalytic methane pyrolysis. It is great to see the results of scientific research being transformed into innovations and new business ventures”, said Lassi in her speech.
Hycamite can be an example for other success stories of research turning into Clean Tec business opportunities
Professor Lassi was also part of panel discussion called “Hycamite's Journey and the Future of Clean and Deep Tech in Finland”, moderated by André Noël Chaker. The panelists Ulla Lassi, Jens Söderholm, Laura Rahikka and Jonne Sandberg discussed their experiences and achievements as part of Hycamite’s journey, and how similar stories can emerge in Finland. Matti Malkamäki, the Founder, Chairman of the Board, and VP of Business Development, kicked off the segment by recounting the birth of Hycamite and led the ribbon cutting ceremony.
As Sari Multala, Minister of Science and Culture, said in her regards to Hycamite:
“Universities and polytechnics, as educators of skilled people, are important partners for companies. In the story of Hycamite, the research expertise of the University of Oulu plays a central role. Discoveries of suitable catalysts made in the university's laboratory are transitioning into a production facility in Kokkola. “
Therefore, the Ministry of Culture and Education sees that the cooperation between higher education institutions and companies should be further increased, which also is reflected in the recent decision from the government to invest 280 million in Research and development funding.
Huge congratulations to Hycamite from the whole H2FUTURE team!
