Markku Hokkanen is the second researcher from the University of Oulu to be chosen for the programme. His research focuses on African history.

Currently, Academy Research Fellow in Archaeology Oula Seitsonen is on a research visit to Cambridge, where he studies the history of Lapland and Sámi communities, as well as issues related to the Holocaust. Seitsonen’s work brings international visibility to research at the University of Oulu and strengthens Finland’s position in esteemed academic communities such as Clare Hall.

The connection between Sámi studies and African research within the academic environment of Cambridge offers an interesting perspective on the programme’s impact. The agreement between the University of Oulu and Clare Hall is rare within the Finnish academic landscape and reinforces the University of Oulu’s international collaboration in a world-class research environment.

Researchers from the University of Oulu who have previously visited Clare Hall include Professor Jouni-Matti Kuukkanen and Senior Research Fellow Heini Hakosalo, who spent a year at the college from autumn 2023 to autumn 2024 with the support of the Oskari Huttunen Foundation. Kuukkanen and Hakosalo are Life Members of Clare Hall, meaning that after their initial visit, they are eligible to return to live and work at Clare Hall for varying periods. All researchers who have worked at Clare Hall receive Life Membership.

Initiated by the Eudaimonia Institute, the collaboration programme provides one researcher from the University of Oulu with the opportunity to spend six months at the University of Cambridge each year. The next application round is expected to open in the autumn.

Applicants must be employed in a unit or project within one of Eudaimonia’s four faculties: Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Education and Psychology, Oulu Business School, Department of Cultural Geography within the Faculty of Science.
