Matti Pouke has started as tenure-track Assistant professor in The extended human mind in multi-realities theme within the Hybrid Intelligence research programme.

Pouke´s background is in digital media technologies, especially those related to 3D graphics and interactive 3D virtual environments. More recently, his research has especially focused on understanding human perception in virtual reality and in different ways of measuring presence, which is the illusion of being in another place and experiencing virtual events as if they were real.

“An interesting aspect of presence is that everyone knows presence when they experience it, however it is very difficult to quantify this sensation scientifically. In my research I will increase our understanding of presence quantification especially in the context of human - digital character interaction. This, in turn, will help us develop better solutions for intelligent virtual agents within the Hybrid Intelligence paradigm.”, says Pouke.

Pouke thinks the multidisciplinary HI research group within this program is providing a great platform for the type of research he is conducting. He sees that the group expertise in AI, ML and machine vision, as well as within human-to-human interaction will be very helpful for him.

“In turn, I hope my expertise in presence, its quantification, and 3D virtual environment and XR technologies will be helpful for others”, he concludes.

We warmly welcome Matti to HI research team!
