Metallurgist Atef Hamada Joins Elite Ranks in Stanford University/Elsevier's Top 2% of Global Scientists
Atef Hamada has been on the Stanford University/Elsevier's Top 2 % Scientists list since 2023. Hamada’s path to this achievement began in Egypt, where he earned both his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Metallurgy and Materials Engineering by 2000. However, limited access to cutting-edge research facilities in his home country spurred his move to Finland in 2004, where he joined the renowned University of Oulu to pursue his doctoral research. Under the mentorship of Professor Pentti Karjalainen, a global authority in materials engineering, Hamada honed his approach to "SMART" research—specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound—key principles that have guided his impressive academic career.
After obtaining his Ph.D., Hamada’s work in advanced high-strength steels took him to new heights. His tenure as a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Advanced Steels Research (CASR) in Finland allowed him to make significant strides in the field, further cementing his expertise in innovative materials processing techniques. In 2014, Hamada returned to Egypt to join the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology, where he not only taught future generations of metallurgists but also engaged with a unique academic culture that broadened his global perspective.
Since 2019, Hamada has been part of the Future Manufacturing Technologies (FMT) group at the University of Oulu’s Kerttu Saalasti Institute, where his research has gained international attention for its relevance to emerging manufacturing technologies. His work on additive manufacturing, laser welding, and advanced steels has attracted widespread recognition, resulting in highly cited publications that continue to influence the direction of industrial research. Hamada’s enduring contributions to scientific knowledge is shaping the future of manufacturing technologies.
What sets Hamada apart is not only his technical expertise but also his commitment to international collaboration. Throughout his career, he has worked with leading scientists and institutions from across the globe—including partners in Finland, Germany, the USA, Iran, Egypt, and Japan. These collaborations have driven breakthrough innovations in advanced steel manufacturing and opened doors to a range of new technologies that are critical for industries like automotive, aerospace, and energy.
The Stanford University/Elsevier global ranking of the Top 2 % Scientists is based on a rigorous analysis of data, including the number of publications, citations, and other metrics that measure a scientist’s influence. Compiled by a team of experts at Stanford University, the list recognizes researchers who have demonstrated a significant influence in their fields through highly cited work, breakthrough innovations, and leadership in scientific discovery.
