New Directors to Infotech and Eudaimonia Institutes

Professor Simo Saarakkala will continue as the Scientific Director of the Infotech Oulu Institute, in the research focus area of the Digitalisation and Smart Society of the university. University Researcher Marja Matinmikko-Blue is appointed as a Research Director of the Infotech. Both for the period, from 1 Jan 2022 to 31 Dec 2026. Professor Jouni-Matti Kuukkanen is the new Director of the Eudaimonia Institute.

Simo Saarakkala has acted as the Scientific Director of the Infotech for the previous 2018-2021 period. As a physicist and professor, he leads his own research group at the Faculty of Medicine. The group focuses interdisciplinarily on the development of new imaging methods for diagnostics of musculoskeletal diseases, particularly osteoarthritis, at tissue level and patient studies.

Marja Matinmikko-Blue holds degrees of Dr.Sc. and Ph.D. Her research combines technology, business, and regulation perspectives, for the development of future mobile communication networks. In addition to her new Research Director position at Infotech, she continues as Director of Sustainability and Regulation at 6G Flagship, where she previously held the position of Research Coordinator.

The aim of the Infotech Oulu Focus Institute is to increase the international appeal of the university and strengthen the effectiveness of interdisciplinary research and cooperation, and doctoral training in its field.

Kuukkanen leads the Eudaimonia

Professor Jouni-Matti Kuukkanen is appointed as the new Director of the Eudaimonia Institute in the field of Human Sciences research from 1 Jan 2022 to 31 Dec 2026.

Kuukkanen’s recent research has focused on philosophy of science and philosophy of history. He was the Chief Editor of Journal of the Philosophy of History 2017-2022, and a Visiting Fellow in Autumn 2021 at Clare Hall in Cambridge University.

The Eudaimonia Institute's mission is to promote and combine research, development, collaboration, and doctoral training in the field of human sciences.
