New Hybrid Intelligence themed seminar series HI Lights launches 29th of May at the University of Oulu
Hybrid Intelligence research programme is launching a new seminar series for all topics related to Hybrid Intelligence theme, HI Lights seminar. The first one will be held on 29th of May at Tellus Stage 8.30-15.00, at the University of Oulu and event is open for all.
The first HI Lights seminar dives into the ways human emotions and behavior can be understood from the data and algorithm aspect. This event features an excellent international lineup of keynote speakers from diverse fields who shed the light on the path to achieving hybrid intelligence through practical tools and research. Our experts come from multidisciplinary backgrounds, including human-computer interaction, machine vision, the co-evolutionary processes of humans and machines, psychiatry and behavioral sciences, and computer vision and AI. Lunch and coffee will be served to the attendees.

Speaker Bios
Nicu Sebe is a professor in the University of Trento, Italy, where he is leading the research in the areas of multimedia information retrieval and human-computer interaction in computer vision applications. He received his PhD from the University of Leiden, The Netherlands and has been in the past with the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. He was involved in the organization of the major conferences and workshops addressing the computer vision and human-centered aspects of multimedia information retrieval, among which as a General Co-Chair of the IEEE Automatic Face and Gesture Recognition Conference, FG 2008, ACM International Conference on Multimedia Retrieval (ICMR) 2017 and ACM Multimedia 2013. He was a program chair of ACM Multimedia 2011 and 2007, ECCV 2016, ICCV 2017, ICPR 2020 and a general chair of ACM Multimedia 2022. He is a fellow of ELLIS, IAPR and a Senior member of ACM and IEEE.
Kaisa Väänänen is a full professor of user experience (Human-Computer Interaction, software engineering) in Tampere University, Finland. Kaisa leads the research group of Human-Centered Technology (IHTE) in the unit of Computing Sciences. She has extensive teaching and supervision experience we well as leadership of study programmes. Kaisa has over 25 years of experience in research related to human-computer interaction both in university and industry. In 1995-2004, she worked at Nokia Inc, in leading positions of user needs research and strategic consumer insights. Kaisa’s research interests cover user experience and human-centered AI, with emphasis on design research of digital services for advancing sustainability. Kaisa is an author of over 180 peer-reviewed academic publications. Kaisa is the head of the doctoral programme of Humans and Technologies, and she has supervised 25 doctoral theses to completition. In 2013-2018, Kaisa served full six years as a member of Academy of Finland’s research council for Natural Sciences and Engineering. She is very active in the international research community, and frequently takes part in organizing conferences related to user experience and human-computer interaction. Kaisa is the general co-chair of ACM SIGCHI 2023 conference.
Prof. Vankee Lin is now a Clinical Professor, in the Deparment of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University. Her career has been devoted to understanding the neural mechanisms involved in brain aging and brain plasticity, with a special focus on early detection and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Her research approach integrates principles and findings from cognitive theory, clinical neuroscience, and computational neuroscience. This approach is complemented by her extensive research experience involving multi-modality neuroimaging (PET, sMRI, dMRI, and fMRI), psychophysiology, neuropsychology, and quantitative research methods.
Dr Haoyu Chen has worked as doctoral researcher and later as a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis (CMVS) since 2017. He recently started as a tenure-track Assistant Professor and is part of the Hybrid Intelligence: Human-AI Co-evolution and Learning in Multi-realities (HI) research programme. He concentrates on developing data processing and computing technology for helping humans and machines understand each other in the Data and algorithm assisted AI research theme. Hybrid Intelligence aims to combine the strengths of both humans and machines in their co-evolutionary processes in productive, responsible, and ethical ways and generate AI-based solutions for fields such as education and nursing by integrating different excellence areas of the University of Oulu.
Mika Rautiainen, Ph.D., is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Valossa Labs. Mika has deep experience in computer vision and artificial intelligence (AI) for media content recognition and understanding and his research team’s innovations have been integrated into Valossa’s content analysis engine, as well as the company’s emotion and expression recognition engine. Mika was previously a senior research fellow at the University of Oulu, in northern Finland, which has one of the world’s most prestigious computer vision labs. He has worked as a researcher with the University of Oulu in various positions for the past 20 years. Mika has also worked as a researcher at the University of Maryland and at NEC’s C&C Central Research Labs, in Japan.
