Professor Mikko Hallman receives the most prestigious award in paediatric medicine

Professor Mikko Hallman is a pioneer in neonatal care and an internationally respected researcher. He has served as Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Oulu since 1996 and as Emeritus Professor since 2013. His career, spanning over four decades, includes significant achievements in the fields of neonatology and paediatric medicine.
Hallman’s research on pulmonary surfactant and its medical applications has played a decisive role in improving the treatment of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in premature infants, both in Finland and globally. Together with his research team, Hallman has conducted long-term studies to investigate the causes of preterm births and to develop treatments.
Hallman has authored over 400 scientific publications and has supervised more than 40 doctoral researchers. He has held numerous positions of trust and has been recognised with multiple national and international awards, including the Matti Äyräpää Prize, the international Maternité Prize, and the Pohjola Medicine Prize.
The Swedish Paediatric Society and the Swedish Medical Society have awarded the Nils Rosén von Rosenstein Medals every five years since 1964. Previous recipients include esteemed professors such as Arvo Ylppö, Niilo Hallman, and Jaakko Perheentupa. This year, in addition to Hallman, the award was granted to Professor Zulfiqar A. Bhutta from Pakistan and Professor Göran Wennergren from Sweden.
