An automatic removal process for unused courses in Moodle will be introduced at the turn of the year 2024–2025. An unused Moodle course means a course that has no visits by participants in the last two years.

The process of removing unused courses utilizes Moodle's archiving feature. Unused courses are first automatically transferred to the archive, from where they are removed from Moodle at the end of the year following the course end date.

You can identify the archived course by the Lock icon on the course card and by the course start and end dates added after the name.

The removal process for unused courses will be introduced for the following reasons:

  • Saving Moodle disk space: If unused courses remain in Moodle, they will take up Moodle disk space. Removal will help save disk space.
  • Compliance with the statutory retention and destruction periods for students' study attainments.
  • It's easier to find your current course area if Moodle has multiple courses with the same name.
