Significant continued funding for the University of Oulu from the Foundation for Pediatric Research
The funding model, initiated in 2022, was originally based on a proposal from university paediatric clinic professors. It enables the integration of clinical work with research and strengthens collaboration between hospitals and universities.
At the University of Oulu, the funding provided by the Foundation for Pediatric Research during 2022–2024 has been directed to research projects led by postdoctoral researchers. In total, ten researchers have benefited from the foundation’s support, which has been utilised across a broad spectrum of paediatric research topics. These include studies on premature birth, paediatric infectious diseases, paediatric neurology, and paediatric surgery.
With the new funding, the University of Oulu will offer postdoctoral clinician-researchers the opportunity to dedicate themselves full-time to research for periods ranging from 1 to 6 months. This initiative supports the integration of clinical practice and research.
“The donation from the Foundation for Pediatric Research allows us to continue supporting paediatric research at our university,” says Osmo Tervonen, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oulu. “Research not only generates new knowledge about diseases but also helps us improve the targeting and quality of treatments, creating broader impacts for the entire field of paediatrics.”
During the upcoming three-year funding period, the Foundation for Pediatric Research will also support research at the universities of Helsinki, Eastern Finland, Tampere, and Turku.
