Students of Norssi upper secondary school begin the autumn semester on Linnanmaa campus
The school's facilities are located on the southwestern side of the campus in the Environmental Sciences Building (Ympäristötietotalo) at Paavo Havaksen tie 3. The teaching facilities will be on the first floor of the building, where spaces previously used by the university will now be used by the Norssi. Facilities for the administration, teachers, and student welfare will be located on the third floor. For teaching physics, chemistry, and biology, the university's laboratory facilities will be utilized.
"Our staff and students have been pleased about the move. We are a university’s teacher training school, and teacher trainees from the university also participate in our teaching. With this move, we become an even more integral part of the university. We will benefit from university-level laboratories, and we are getting good facilities with healthy indoor air quality in the Environmental Sciences Building. The student body will also get its own room in a central location in the lobby of the building," says Principal Pasi Hieta from the Norssi upper secondary school.
Next academic year, 82 new students will start at Norssi upper secondary school. The number of applicants this spring was the highest in ten years, during which time the Finnish National Agency for Education has collected statistics on applicants. Out of the 666 applicants for Norssi, 150 were first-choice applicants. In the spring of 2023, there were 417 applicants, of whom 57 were primary applicants.
"I believe that the proximity to the University of Oulu and the Oulu University of Applied Sciences, as well as the university's laboratory facilities used for learning, attracted future students," says Hieta.
In addition to Norssi and the University of Oulu, the second floor of the Environmental Sciences Building houses the facilities of the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) and the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke).
Upper secondary school students will have lunch at Foobar
The relocation of the upper secondary school to the Environmental Sciences Building will cause minor renovations, which will be carried out during the summer. Lecture halls IT115 and IT116 in the building will be shared between the general upper secondary school and the university. The university's common parking areas will also be available for the Norssi upper secondary school's staff and students.
The upper secondary school students will have lunch at the Foobar restaurant, located at the crossroad of ATK-katu and Väylä. The restaurant is also available for the university students and staff outside the upper secondary school lunch hours. The restaurant will inform about detailed opening hours later.
