Tapio Nykänen started as a tenure track Associate Professor in the FRONT research programme
We are happy to announce that Tapio Nykänen started as a professor of Resilience, Resistance, and Reconciliation in the FRONT research programme this September. His position is placed in the Faculty of Humanities, Giellagas Institute, and is part of the Resilient human-society relations theme of FRONT.
Nykänen researchers Northern politics, societies and cultures
Nykänen is a researcher of Northern politics, societies, and cultures, currently examining change in reindeer herding cultures and the future of Nordic democracy, particularly from the perspective of the Indigenous Sámi. His previous research topics have included, for example, Sámi political history, Northern identity politics, civil disobedience, activism, the politics of the revival movement Laestadianism, and China's Arctic politics. Before joining FRONT, he worked as a University Lecturer in Political Science at the University of Lapland. Nykänen is also an Adjunct Professor of Political Science at the University of Jyväskylä.
“I’m eagerly looking forward to working in the multidisciplinary FRONT programme. Comprehensive resilience involves psychological, geographical, ecological, cultural, and political factors, making it a prime example of a phenomenon that truly requires cross-disciplinary collaboration”, says Nykänen.
Resilient human-society relations theme develops innovative approaches to investigating how human adaptability and resilience to change are influenced by social group and community aspects and values on various spatio-temporal scales. It analyses and initiates actions to institutionalize wellbeing, sustainable lifestyles, and healthier future environments, particularly in the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions, especially in the context of indigenous Sami culture.
