The University of Oulu leaves X - focuses on other social media platforms

The University of Oulu will discontinue university-level communications in the X. The decision concerns the university's main account (@UniOulu) and the content produced by the university's communications. Redirects to X will be removed from the university's website Oulu.fi and, for example, from the university's stakeholder newsletters.

The decision is based on X's long-term decline in impact and reach, as well as the changed nature of the channel. Some Finnish universities, many public administration organizations, associations, and companies have made the decision to abandon the channel.

"X's reach has dropped considerably. The platform's nature has become unpredictable and an instrument of a certain kind of policy. As a university, we want to participate in a democratic and constructive debate that includes appreciating science and research. Now X does not seem to offer such a platform," says Marja Jokinen, Director of Communications at the University of Oulu.

Faculties, research units, independent units, centers, projects, and staff can continue to use X in their own accounts and messages if willing to do so. Even if the university's presence in the service ends, staff will be offered support in questions regarding the use of all social media platforms.

In the future, the University of Oulu will invest in communications and marketing in channels that best support the University's goals and values. The University of Oulu has accounts on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Snapchat and TikTok. Relevant channels are evaluated as part of normal communications work.

"The University wants to encourage members of the university community to participate in the discussion on science, research and education on social media. Good platforms for discussing these topics are, for example, LinkedIn and Bluesky," says Janne Hakkarainen, Communications Specialist responsible for social media at the University of Oulu.
