What Do Students Think About Wellbeing? - Results from the Hurmos Survey

At the Hurmos 2024 evening event, a survey was conducted to gather insights on the wellbeing of students at the University of Oulu. Nearly 500 responses were received, most of them coming from first- to third-year students. The responses particularly emphasized the need for low-threshold services and a sense of community.

The survey aimed to identify things that contribute to our students' wellbeing. Family, friends, partners as well as hobbies and sports were the aspects that were mentioned most frequently in the answers. Additionally, animals, nature, and food were mentioned in multiple answers. Lastly, free time, studies, and sleep were also recognized as factors supporting well-being.

The survey also sought to understand the kinds of services or activities students would like to see to support their wellbeing. Responses highlighted a high need for low-threshold services, peer support groups, mental health and therapy services.

I would like to see more investment in mental well-being, even though work is already being done in this area (translated from Finnish).

Services that guide and support studying were considered important: "how can I study in the way that suits me best". Students expressed a desire for more guided wellness courses, remote lectures on wellbeing, and social media content related to wellness. Additionally, there was a desire for things like a student gym, fitness benefits, as well as spaces for meeting and socializing.

As the most meaningful factors supporting student wellbeing, students particularly valued community events and activities where they can meet others and make friends. There was interest in events focused on alcohol-free gatherings, crafts, and physical activities.

More of socializing events where we get to know and make new friends!

Overall, the services and activities were hoped to provide comprehensive support for physical and mental wellbeing and to strengthen students' sense of community.

The survey was conducted by the Guidance Services and the Noste development program in collaboration.
