The project aims at developing vehicle engineering research in the Oulu region. The field of vehicle engineering undergoes an age of transition emphasizing the need of research at university level. The University of Oulu has a good opportunity to meet the challenge. It offers education for vehicle engineering at Master’s degree level and has a research group dedicated to the field that both present exceptional expertise in Finland. Thanks to the level of expertise and the arctic specialization, the Oulu region has a tremendous possibility to raise its expertise profile on both national and international level in the field of vehicle engineering. This claims long-term work and especially development of cooperation with the industry and other fields of science.

The project enhances both the research and business opportunities in the field of vehicle engineering in the Oulu region. The cooperation of the project is based on the case study of timing belt issue occurring in the Oulu region (Tornio-Oulu-Raahe). This issue serves well as basis of the cooperation. Diverse research expertise and the expertise of the industry are needed for the research question to be solved.
