Safeguarding biodiversity through interdisciplinary research on habitat restoration (SAFIRE)

SAFIRE is a research capacity building programme on habitat restoration at the University of Oulu. It aims to drive a paradigm shift in habitat restoration research and action by providing knowledge and tools for environmentally effective and socially just ecosystem restoration of degraded ecosystems, especially in the Arctic. The research programme is funded by the Research Council of Finland under the Profi8 call in the period 2025-2030.

Our vision

SAFIRE is based on trans- and interdisciplinary research, combining fields such as ecology, genomics, remote sensing, cultural anthropology, environmental humanities, science and technology studies (STS), hydrology, mathematical and ecohydrological modelling, and economics. We believe that to restore habitats we need both excellent science and excellent societal engagement. Therefore, SAFIRE engages and co-produces knowledge and solutions with societal actors, both at the level of individual projects, and at an institutional level within the University of Oulu. We include non-academic stakeholders in the process of knowledge production. Dedicated staff members help our research teams build meaningful transdisciplinary collaborations through our Knowledge Co-Production Platform and the Arctic Stakeholder Forum.

SAFIRE is part of a wider Profi8 program at the University of Oulu, funded by the Research Council of Finland, and it is co-led by the Faculties of Science and Humanities at the University of Oulu. It builds on excellent research programmes, including Profi6 Biodiversity dynamics and community co-existence in the Anthropocene Arctic and the Digital Waters Flagship.

Leaders

SAFIRE is led by Stefan Prost from the Faculty of Science and Anna Krzywoszynska from the Faculty of Humanities. SAFIRE management board comprises Thora Herrmann, Anu Eskelinen, Bjørn Kløve, and Hannu Marttila.

Research themes

SAFIRE aims for socially just, scientifically robust, and efficient action on habitat restoration through:

  • clearer understanding of trade-offs and change pathways for stakeholders using modelling, simulation and regular dialogue
  • new restoration Living Labs and citizen science initiatives
  • improved safeguarding of biodiversity and climate change mitigation action through improved, transdisciplinary methods

Research activities delivered under SAFIRE will be guided by the following themes:
