Ismail graduated his bachelor degree of Geophysics from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Indonesia, and later working as junior research staff at the faculty of Forestry in the same Univeristy with the expertise on remote sensing and GIS. He then pursued Master by Research in Department of Infrastructure, School of Engineering, University of Melbourne, Australia, and returned to UGM afterward. Currently, he is enrolling as Phd researcher in department of Water, Energy and Environmental Engineering (WE3), University of Oulu, and working his research of 'Restoration of tropical peatland in Indonesia'.
