I specialize in aquatic microbiology where I explore the microorganisms present in water systems ranging from natural waters (freshwater and marine) to wastewater. My focal microbes are bacterial communities and I have also done research on microalgae. I am also interested on how the environment shapes microbial ecology and to understand their dynamics, I simultaneously assess water quality parameters on a spatial and temporal scale.
Currently, I am working on a project investigating the occurrence of antimicrobial resistant bacteria in aquatic systems, which include point sources from wastewater treatment plants and the receiving water bodies of the effluents, in the northern region of Finland.
