Joonas Kauppila

Joonas H Kauppila, Professor of Clinical Epidemiology and GI surgery consultant, received his M.D. in 2013 and Ph.D. in 2014 from the University of Oulu, Finland. He became a Docent in Cancer Biology in 2015, at the age of 27 years, as one of the youngest docents in medical sciences ever in Finland. Kauppila worked as a Research Fellow at Karolinska Insitutet, Sweden from 2016 until 2019. He was appointed Professor of Clinical Epidemiology (30%) at University of Oulu starting September 2021 and became a consultant surgeon in April 2023.

He leads his independent research team since 2019. His key interest areas are upper gastrointestinal disorders, including cancer, bariatric surgery and reflux disease.
