Mr. Salmi studied Materials and Rock Engineering sciences from 1988 to 1995 and holds a M.Sc. degree from 1995 in Rock Engineering and Mineral Processing from the Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University) in Finland. These studies also included one year at Luleå University of Technology in Sweden.
After graduating, Mr. Salmi has worked for more than 25 years in the Finnish mining industry and operating mines and has held 10 different positions there, such as Mine planning engineer, Mining engineer, Mine production engineer and Head of Mining at both Outokumpu’s Kemi chromite and Hitura nickel mines in Finland. In 2014-2021, he has also as the Vice President of Kemi Mine and Head of Kemi Mine’s deepening project. He has special expertise in mine planning, data processing, information management and information systems, mining automation, digitalization, strategy planning and managerial work.
From 2021 onwards, Mr. Salmi decided to leave industrial work and moved to the academic side to prepare his doctoral dissertation as a Doctoral Researcher at the University of Oulu in Finland on topics like digitalisation in mining, data management, information modelling, mine automation and system dynamic modelling, while working there also as Research Director in the Civil engineering unit, Digital Construction and Mining research area.
Mr. Salmi has a long and diverse 25+ years of industrial experience in mine operations, long and multi-level, more than two decades of experience in management in mine organisations, long and extensive experience in project planning and management, mining automation and information management. In addition, he has an extensive and diverse network of contacts in the mining and related industries, including previously various positions of trust and extensive history of visits to several different mines on four different continents.
Favourite hobbies; social dancing, cross country skiing and outdoor living.
