The research projects mainly focus on temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and facial pain- their epidemiology, background factors, diagnostics, and treatment. The epidemiological studies are mostly included in comprehensive, population-based Finnish studies (Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1996 and1986, Health 2000/2011, Healthy Finland Survey). The aims are to evaluate the prevalence of TMD, facial pain and bruxism, as well as their association with body pain, pain sensitivity, psychosocial factors, and genetic factors, among others. Research on TMD diagnostics aims to evaluate the applicability of the international, validated Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (DC/TMD) in Finnish patient population. The current study of treatment of TMD comprises the effectiveness of applied relaxation on TMD pain, based on a randomized clinical trial. The sample of the study includes TMD patients from Finnish Student Health Service.
