Riitta Kaarteenaho received her medical degree (1989) and PhD (1999) at University of Oulu, Finland. She performed her training as a specialist physician in respiratory medicine (2003) and as a specialist physician in pathology (1998) at Oulu University Hospital. She has acted as a professor and physician-in-chief of respiratory medicine at University of Eastern Finland and Kuopio University Hospital (2013-2016), director of Medical Research Center Oulu at University of Oulu and Oulu University Hospital (2019), and a vice dean of education in the Faculty of Medicine at University of Oulu. She has acted as a president of the Board of the Finnish Respiratory Society between years 2017-2020. Presently she is acting as a physician-in-chief of respiratory medicine and a professor of respiratory medicine & pulmonary pathology at University of Oulu and Oulu University Hospital.
Her main research interests are on biomarkers as well as pathogenesis and disease course prediction of fibrotic interstitial lung diseases.
