Virpi Glumoff
PhD, Adjunct Professor in Molecular Microbiology
Laboratory Manager
I am head of the flow cytometry core on the campus of Kontinkangas at the University of Oulu. I work together with several research groups on the campus to help the researchers to analyse or even sort the cells for further cultivation and deeper analysis methods.
My journey as a researcher started in mid 80’s with yeast genetics at the University of Turku, at the Department of Biochemistry. I continued to work with yeasts at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich, Switzerland (ETH Zürich) doing my PhD. During those years I found out how to harness an genetically unknown yeast as a machinery for heterologous protein production. During my postdoc time at the University of Turku, at the Department of Medical Biochemistry I got familiar with cartilage and expression of the extracellular matrix proteins. To Oulu I moved in late 90’s to do research with pulmonary surfactants in context of premature birth and inflammation at the Department of Paediatrics. When I changed the research group and joined the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology I got familiar with medical virology. After working with viruses and their diagnostics it was easy to move over to the field of immunology. Since 2008 my researcher journey has accompanied with immunology with glimpse of autoimmunity, allergology and primary immune deficiencies. There is a common denominator for this study, to get familiar with the immune cells and to do analysis of the cells by flow cytometry.
