Academic traditions

University celebrations are associated with certain centuries-old traditions that date back to the early years of the first European universities, from the 1100s to the 1200s. For example, doctoral conferment ceremonies have been held since the Middle Ages. Different universities and different disciplines can also have their own traditions that complement the common academic traditions.

Traditional academic celebrations and ceremonies

Many university celebrations follow academic traditions. The traditions help to create a sense of belonging within the university community, and by fostering traditions, a sense of belonging is also passed on from one generation to the next.

When attending traditional academic ceremonies, it is polite to take into account the dignified nature of the occasion. It is not appropriate to arrive late or to cause a disturbance by leaving in the middle of the event. Traditional academic celebrations include doctoral conferment ceremony, doctoral thesis defence and other graduation ceremonies, new professors' lectures and the opening ceremony of the academic year.
