Research Unit of Biomedicine and Internal Medicine
The Research Unit of Biomedicine and Internal Medicine carries out high-quality research in selected focus areas in biomedical and translational research and in internal medicine. The biomedical and translational research focuses on the molecular mechanisms and potential therapies of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases using methods of physiology, pharmacology and immunology. We also conduct research on drug safety and toxicology and the physiological effects of cold and hot. The research in the field of internal medicine is conducted in the clinics, the Medical Research Center Oulu (MRC Oulu) and Biocenter Oulu, with the focus of cardiology respiratory and metabolic diseases and obesity.
The research creates new knowledge and offers a possibility to review the customary health care practices and enable introduction of new diagnostic or therapeutic methods.
The Biomedical and Internal Medicine Research Unit is responsible for the teaching of pharmacology and toxicology, physiology and medical microbiology and immunology and internal medicine at the Faculty of Medicine.
Head of Unit: Professor Jukka Hakkola
Vice Head of Unit: Professor Olavi Ukkola
