Atef Hamada: A Journey of Exploration and Collaboration - My Experience at the University of Oulu

Allow me to take you on a journey through my academic ventures and research experiences at the esteemed University of Oulu. I am Atef Hamada, originally from Egypt, and my story is one of academic pursuit, collaboration, and a deep appreciation for the Finnish culture. First I tell about my Academic Odyssey from PhD to Senior Researhcer.
Atef Hamada

In August 2004, I embarked on a transformative journey to Finland to pursue my Ph.D. in Materials Engineering at the University of Oulu. Under the guidance of the distinguished Prof. Pentti Karjalainen, who is now an Emeritus Professor, I delved into the intricate world of materials science. In 2007, I proudly earned my doctoral degree from this renowned institution.

Post-Ph.D., I continued my academic journey as a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre of Advanced Steel Research (CASR), further honing my skills in advanced materials. Currently, I hold the position of a senior researcher at the Future Manufacturing Technologies (FMT) group at the University of Oulu, Kerttu Saalasti Institute.

Research Focus: Unveiling the Secrets of Materials

My research endeavors revolve around the fascinating realms of additive manufacturing and laser welding, with a primary focus on ultra-high-strength steels. My work aims to develop materials endowed with exceptional strength through various manufacturing technologies.

My publications span a diverse array of materials, including ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, as well as composites. By crafting innovative research ideas, I strive to enhance the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of materials. Leveraging advanced techniques such as SEM-EBSD and TEM, I unravel the intricate microstructures, dissecting the deformation mechanisms governing processes like fatigue and fracture

Cultivating Collaborations: A Key to Progress

As a senior researcher, fostering mutual cooperation and the free exchange of ideas within the FMT group is paramount to me. I am dedicated to nurturing the skills of fellow researchers, providing them with the resources needed to deliver high-standard research.

Beyond the borders of Finland, I have actively sought and established collaborations to broaden my knowledge in materials engineering. Currently, I am on a five-month research visit to Forschungszentrum in Jülich, Germany, as part of the DREAM project. I firmly believe that scientific collaboration sparks ideas for new projects and contributes to the collective growth of the research community.

Finland: A Second Home

My journey in Finland has not only been academically enriching but also deeply rooted in cultural experiences. Finland, with its breathtaking landscapes and warm-hearted people, has become a second home to me. The Finnish culture, known for its emphasis on innovation, education, and nature, has left an indelible mark on my perspective.

Looking Ahead: Embracing Future Collaborations

As I reflect on my academic journey at the University of Oulu, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities and experiences that have shaped my career. Looking ahead, I am enthusiastic about continuing to contribute to the field of materials engineering and fostering collaborations that transcend borders.

To new beginnings, shared knowledge, and endless possibilities!
