The board elected Arto Maaninen as rector, decided to set up student and teaching service centres and launched a property strategy work

At its meeting on 26 September 2024, the Board of Directors of the University of Oulu elected Arto Maaninen as the new Rector of the university for a five-year term starting 1 January 2025. Arto Maaninen has served as the Vice Rector for Cooperation at the University of Oulu since December 2017. Prior to this, he worked at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland in research management roles and as a Research Professor.

The board decided to establish two service centres at the University of Oulu, one providing services for students and the other for teaching. The change highlights the importance of excellent student experience and high-quality teaching at the university. The service centres are expected to start operating at the beginning of 2025.

The board authorised Chief Financial Officer Pekka Riuttanen to launch the university's property strategy work, which aims to ensure that the university's existing facilities and buildings effectively support its long-term financial and operational objectives. The strategy will serve as a guiding document for the university's management in making decisions on the acquisition, maintenance, development and use of its buildings.

In addition, the board

  • heard the report of the finance committee, appointed by the board in April. The temporary finance committee prepares the ground for financial matters to be discussed by the board.
  • decided to invest in the Finnish eQ PE XVI North special investment fund as part of the University of Oulu's alternative investment portfolio.
  • received a report on security issues with a focus on ensuring the physical security of campuses.
