Legendary metal fatigue expert, Emeritus Professor Yukitaka Murakami, Kyushu University, Japan visited University of Oulu

Emeritus Professor Murakami (1943), Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan is an internationally acknowledged expert on metal fatigue and hydrogen embrittlement. He is best known for the widely used sqrt(area) parameter model, which is used to predict the fatigue limit of a component containing small defects, and the statistics of extremes method applied to inclusion rating in steel quality control.
. After the lecture, Prof. Murakami challenged Joona Vaara from Wärtsilä to sumo battle.

He has published more than 400 journal articles and fifteen books. Prof. Murakami edited Stress Intensity Factors Handbook, Vol. 1-5 as the editor-in chief. Prof. Murakami has been awarded several times, including the appreciated Wöhler Medal in 1998 and The Paul Paris Gold Medal in 2013. In addition, he has worked as a leader of the 21st Century COE Program “Integration Technology of Mechanical Systems for Hydrogen Utilization”, the director of the Research Center for Hydrogen Industrial Use and Storage (HYDROGENIUS), and the Special advisor to Director of International institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (I2CNER). Prof. Murakami can be considered as the pioneer of modern hydrogen technology.

Prof. Murakami was invited to Oulu by Postdoctoral Researcher Mari Åman, who has been working with him for a decade, including four years research visit to Kyushu University. Prof. Murakami’s visit was organized by Global Boiler Works Oy (GBW), Business Oulu and the University of Oulu. Prof. Murakami gave a special one-day lecture on 30th April.
