Nafisa Yeasmin appointed MicroENTRE® Development Manager at the University of Oulu Kerttu Saalasti Institute
Yeasmin holds a master’s degree from the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, and moved to Rovaniemi with her husband. She started working on his PhD in 2013 and completed her own PhD on Arctic migration at the University of Lapland in 2018. She also holds a PhD in Sociology of Migration at the University of Tampere.
Dr Yeasmin is the 2019 Scientist of the Year and leads the UArctic Thematic Network on Arctic Migration. Her research interests include sustainable entrepreneurship development, the socio-economic integration of migrants in the Arctic, regional development, community sustainability, social inclusion, migration management, human rights, and gender equality. Recent areas of interest include the well-being of migrant youth and integrated education.
"I study migration in the Arctic, which is a sparsely populated area. Immigration is an important issue for our society because the demographic challenges we face in the North need to be addressed and we need a stable labor market and economy," says Yeasmin.
Yeasmin considers research on entrepreneurship at the University of Oulu Kerttu Saalasti Institute focal because entrepreneurship research directly impacts society's sustainable development. As Development Manager of MicroENTRE, she wants to develop the entrepreneurial regime for micro-entrepreneurs based on existing and future research.
Strong national and international project and financial expertise
"Nafisa Yeasmin has the skills to manage multiple responsibilities, and her strengths include strong experience in preparing, implementing, and managing various EU projects. She has a proven track record in securing national and international funding and experience in managing different types of projects and research activities. Her diverse and topical research portfolio, including immigrant and women entrepreneurship, is an excellent complement to MicroENTRE's research themes", says Professor Matti Muhos, Director of the Kerttu Saalasti Institute at the University of Oulu.
Yeasmin's strong research background also pleases MicroENTRE's Research Director Martti Saarela, who says that the new Development Manager is expected to make a strong contribution to raising the quality of research and developing the research group's project portfolio, especially in the direction of competitive and international research funding.
