Participate in the R&D competition – the winning team will present an idea in Tokyo in July

Are you interested in to innovate the future products and services? Do you want to learn product development and create networks for potential future employers and colleagues? Do you want to gain experience in international and multidisciplinary work?

Together with Shimizu Corporation, the University of Oulu organises Shimizu Innovation Contest to find new solutions to the needs of mankind. The winners of the competition will be able to present their ideas at the opening of the Shimizu Innovation Center in Tokyo, Japan, in July 2023. There will be no costs for students of the trip.

All the degree students and postgraduate students of the University of Oulu can participate in the competition regardless of the field.

What are we innovating?

The ideas of the competition seek innovative solutions for the needs of construction, work and housing. Ideas do not need to be limited to the earth, but they also seek innovations that are related to the long-term future and the needs of mankind.

Schedule of the competition

The kick-off info of the competition will be held on January 9, 2023 at 11 am at Tellus Bacstage in Linnanmaa campus. You are welcome to the info even though you are not yet sure of participation.

The competition begins on 11 January 2023 and proceeds in three stages. In the first phase, the competition teams are building concepts, about half of which will proceed to the second stage of the competition. The second phase focuses on developing concepts towards a product demo by building prototypes from concepts and testing prototypes by users, customers and experts. In the third phase, Shimizu Corporation will be used to select 1-3 product demos and teams who are preparing to present their final product demo in Tokyo in July 2023.

Support for ideas from the product development course

In addition to participating in the idea competition, students can participate in the product development course. By participating in the International cross-disciplinary product development project (TI00AH12) course a student can receive total of 10 credits during the design competition. There will be weekly meetings and the idea is worked out in its own multidisciplinary groups. The course starts on 11 January 2023.
