Welcome to follow the doctoral procession on Saturday – Facilities on the Linnanmaa campus are reserved for the use of doctoral conferment ceremony
The university community and citizens are warmly welcome to follow the procession to the city centre on Saturday 18 May, starting around 3:30 pm. The procession will move from Mannerheim Park directly along Kirkkokatu to Oulu Cathedral. The procession has a weather reservation: in rainy weather, it is not organized.
It is possible to follow the doctoral conferment ceremony live on the University of Oulu's website on Saturday, 18 May, starting at 12 PM. In the ceremony, total of 243 young doctors who have defended their theses in recent years are ceremonially admitted as full members of the academic community. During the inauguration, the doctors are presented with the symbols of a doctorate: the doctoral hat, sword, and diploma.
At the same time, a total of 17 honorary doctors, selected by the faculties, will be inaugurated. Among the honorary doctors are, for example, the President of Iceland Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, Nobel laureate William Kaelin, and the Artistic Director of Helsinki Festival Marko Ahtisaari. Inauguration as an honorary doctor is the highest honor the university can bestow upon an individual. Honorary doctors have made significant scientific or socially significant contributions to the University of Oulu.
Tellus closed for the Weekend – Movement around Foodoo Garden and the central lobby restricted
The conferment ceremony will cause some restrictions and changes to movement on the Linnanmaa campus. Tellus will be completely closed from Saturday to Sunday 18-19 May. Also, the main building, the central lobby, and the facilities of Foodoo Garden, including the upstairs, will be reserved for the conferment ceremony, and normal movement will not be possible in these areas. There will be signs indicating alternative routes.
The parking areas P1, P2 ja P11 (university’s side) on the Linnanmaa campus will be reserved for doctoral conferment use on Friday evening 17 May, and all day on Saturday 18 May. The parking area must be cleared of cars by Friday evening.
